Straub Peter S Books : Shadowland

Wonderful, imaginative, epic - This is quite simply one of the best books I have read. The story is the classic young innocent against evil older power, the main character initially learns from the evil elder, and is forced to confront him in the end. All of the character s stories are explored both in the present and the past through brilliant use of storytelling and description, it is a true classic. Gripping, and powerful. Even the incidental characters are rounded and interesting - it is quite simply flawless.

A real suspense - This book really held my imagination throughout, not a moment could be spent thinking of anything else. The plot thickens and turns throughout the entire book. Just when you think that you have worked out what s happening it turns another corner. Some of it was hard to keep up with but that added to the suspense. This book will capture your imagination and keep you hooked.

Shadowland -This book has the lot - I was looking for an additional horror author to supplement my King collection and Straub seemed a good place to start following his collaboration with King in the Talisman . Initially this book appeared to be a difficult read due to the short punchy style of Straub s writing and the clever way he bamboozal s (is that how you spell it?) the reader by getting the characters to ask constant questions that just never get answered until right at the end. But when you get into it it is just superb - haunted mansions, woods , secret tunnels, magic, wizards, horror , fables , fantasy - he includes the lot, including an ending that doesn t disappoint. If you like horror/fantasy stories that will test your brain aswell as entertain then you will love this. Straub certainly writes in a style that elevates him from some of the juvenile writing of other horror authors.

A tangible, earth-shattering journey into magic - Peter Straub weaves a mind-blowing web of horror and emotion in this unsettling tale of darkest magic. As with his subsequent novel, The Talisman co-written with Stephen King, Straub demonstrates his unnervingly clear vision of magic at its most real, devastating and climactic potency. Quite simply, this is a book that can be re-read just to absorb Peter Straub s mastery of story telling.
